It's flu season - things you can do to stay healthy.
Every year we hear the rumblings of the start of flu season. This year there is one exception. There is a new kid on the block called H1N1. It is expected to reach epidemic proportions according to the CDC. Did you know that not all flu's are the same? Seasonal flu, H1N1, Avian (Bird) flu and pandemic flu do not all boast the same signs or symptoms. They all vary. If you are not sure if you have the run of the mill flu or something worse it is best to see your physician so that they can further examine you and maybe do some tests. It's always better safe than sorry in this case since we really don't know how deadly the H1N1 will be this season.
Most physicians will recommend a flu shot if you are a child, elderly or have respritory alements such as asthma to help you combat the bacteria that runs amuck in the fall.
The best thing to do to help combat this illness is to prevent the illness from taking hold by washing your hands, covering your nose and mouth when you cough, staying home from school or work for at least 24 hours after your fever has broken and by all means do not go to work or school if you have a fever! Hand sanitizer is great in a pinch but nothing really beats good old soap and warm water.
