Short North – Believe the hype!
The Short North is a vibrant neighborhood in Columbus Ohio that dares you not to notice. This collection of alternative boutiques, galleries, condominiums, bars and restaurants that lines High Street and connected with 17 lighted metal archways is the filling between downtown Columbus and Ohio State Universities South Gateway.
On any given night in the Short North you can find something interesting and different to do. The dynamic arts culture and dining are a sure way to please your craving for beautiful visual stimulation while enjoying fine culinary treats. It is in effect a collective experience.
The Short North is also well known throughout the country as being a substantially gay neighborhood, but does not exclusively cater to the gay crowd. You will see the gay pride flag displayed throughout the district with no apologies. Recently The Short North hosted the Doo Dah Parade which starts Columbus’s Annual Fourth of July celebration that carries on throughout the evening. This event encourages participation and drama.
In 2009, The Greater Columbus Arts Council (GCAC) nominated the Short North Business Association (SNBA) for the 2009 Artistic Excellence award for Art al Fresco, one of many creative ventures that happen in the area.
October is a wonderful month in the Short North with the Second annual Highball Halloween: Masquerade on High which is a cross between Mardi gras, The Rocky Horror Picture Show and well, anything that is Halloween. Last year nearly 10,000 guest attended the event which boast creative costumes, family friendly (and animal friendly) runway shows and contest. This is a lighthearted celebration of Columbus’ diversity and creativity.
Short North is authentic to its citizens. When you walk down High Street and window shop don’t be surprised if you see some four legged friends wagging their tail at you and greeting you with a curious enthusiastic “Hi! Welcome to our store” sniff at your feet.
This represents the family feel of the area. There isn’t too much that is forbidden here in the district hence its charm.
The Short North not only play’s a vital role in Columbus’ Art District but caters to music lovers also with live bands playing at many different venues that line High Street. This support for local musicians spans such places at Skully’s Music Diner, Newport Music Hall and the Short North Tavern.
There isn’t a lack of things to do or to explore when you visit the Short North. Just wear some comfortable shows and bring your appetite and a sense of adventure and you will have a wonderful story to tell your friends and then next time you visit you can invite them along.
